President’s Message
Hello ASCE Nebraska Section,
As we begin a new ASCE year, I want to start by thanking everyone who has trusted me with the opportunity to serve as President of the Nebraska Section. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together this year, and we’re already off and running.
One of my primary goals is simple: get more people involved.
The Nebraska Section has a tremendous number of talented engineers throughout our state, but membership alone doesn’t make a strong professional organization. Participation does. This year, I want us to create more opportunities for our members to become involved, whether that means attending an event, volunteering for a committee, serving as a liaison for their company or public agency, helping our student chapters, or eventually stepping into a leadership position.
We recently completed our annual budget meeting, which gave the Board an opportunity to begin turning some of these goals into concrete plans for the coming year. We discussed how we can continue supporting our student chapters, strengthen membership and outreach efforts, and make sure our resources are being used to create opportunities for members throughout Nebraska. It was a good reminder that there is a lot we want to accomplish this year, and now comes the fun part of actually doing it.
We are also working to strengthen the continuity of our Section. That means bringing more people into our committees and leadership structure, developing better connections with firms and public agencies across the state, and making it easier for someone who wants to become involved to find a place to contribute.
And if you’re reading this thinking, "I’ve been meaning to get more involved with ASCE," consider this your invitation. You do not need to hold an officer or chair position to have an active voice in the Nebraska Section. If there is something ASCE should be doing, something you would like to help us do, or you simply want to know where you can pitch in, I want to hear from you.
One opportunity to do exactly that is the ASCE Nebraska Infrastructure Report Card. Putting together the Report Card takes engineers from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, and it is a great way to contribute your professional experience to something that reaches well beyond our regular Section activities. If you have expertise in one of Nebraska’s infrastructure categories, or simply have an interest in being part of the effort, we would love to get you involved. Please reach out if you are interested, and we can help connect you with the team.
We have a full year ahead of us with technical meetings, student activities, Younger Member Group events, tours, conferences, outreach, and plenty of opportunities to reconnect with colleagues throughout the profession.
My hope is that, by the end of this year, we haven't simply hosted another successful calendar of ASCE events. I hope we've brought some new people into the room, given more of our existing members a reason to participate, and made the Nebraska Section a little stronger for next year.
I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the year.
Tregan P. D. Albers II, P.E., M.S.
